City of Moreton Bay Matters: Federal Election Priorities 2025

With the federal election approaching, City of Moreton Bay is calling on federal parties and candidates to address our priorities and commit to our election asks to ensure our city remains a great place to live, work and play.

As one of Australia’s fastest-growing local government areas, City of Moreton Bay needs its fair share of funding to support growth and ensure a sustainable future.

We urge federal leaders to commit to the critical infrastructure and services our vibrant and diverse communities need to thrive.

Our election priorities for City of Moreton Bay

South East Queensland is experiencing rapid growth, with the City of Moreton Bay population set to double to 1 million people in the next 30 years.

To help future-proof our city, we want the next Australian Government to address our 2 main priorities with 10 election asks.

Funding for growth: critical infrastructure to tackle congestion and unlock housing

Funding for growth: to ensure liveability, sustainability and resilience

1. A fair share of tax revenue

  • A guaranteed 1% of Commonwealth taxation revenue for councils, indexed annually with payment certainty.
  • Protection of minimum grant allocations to ensure growth councils receive their share of Financial Assistance Grants.
  • Honouring the $100 million commitment for Waraba's infrastructure under the SEQ City Deal.

2. Buchanan Road overpass - investment and corridor upgrade program

  • Council requests $600,000 for the Buchanan Road business case. A further $100 million for construction to connect transport networks and support housing growth.

3. Bruce Highway western alternative - Moreton Motorway

  • We're calling for a 2032 delivery commitment for the Bruce Highway western alternative - Moreton Motorway. A partnership with the Australian and Queensland Governments to fast-track planning and construction.

4. Moreton Bay Ferry Service - Bay Cats

  • We're seeking funding for a business case to establish a ferry network linking coastal hubs. This will help to ease congestion and provide further transport options.

5. Crime prevention and public safety

  • Council's requesting $3 million for enhanced surveillance and crime prevention. Including lighting, hoon prevention and CCTV cameras.

6. Fair access to mobile and NBN connectivity in our rural areas

  • We're calling for reduced red tape and funding to address mobile black spots and improve broadband in NBN-deprived areas.

7. Addressing network congestion during disasters

  • We're advocating for a public safety national broadband. Prioritising emergency alerts and giving first responders priority access.

8. Local Disaster Coordination Centre

  • We're seeking $30 million for a new Local Disaster Coordination Centre in Petrie to support first responders during emergencies.

9. Changing Places facilities

  • We're calling for 3 permanent Changing Facilities, valued at $500,000 each. To further enhance accessibility, we're requesting one portable facility valued at $350,000.

10. Wildlife Education Centre

  • Council's requesting $10 million for a wildlife education centre as part of the new Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital.
