Create a seasons-inspired calico wall hanging | Kallangur

A watercolour drawing on calico, the drawing is of gumnuts and native plants on ground covered with stones and bark, with three part circles that look like ripples in the foreground.

Draw on the concepts of time and nature’s seasons, of the land, the wind and the seas in your artwork. This is also in keeping with an ancient Japanese custom of wabi-sabi which celebrates the impermanence and imperfection of nature.

First Nations local artist Janice Peacock will guide you as you experiment with watercolour mediums, charcoal, ochres and soft pastels. Select images can then be re-created on to your calico wall hanging.

Like all Joy Connection workshops, no experience is necessary. Celebrate the seasons and the imperfect beauty of nature - rustic, earthy and organic.

About your host

Janice Peacock is a mixed media, 2 and 3-dimensional artist. She is of Torres Strait Islander descent, of Erub (Darnley Island) in the Eastern Islands, Meriam Mir language group. Born in North Queensland and growing up in Redcliffe, Janice lives and works on Gubbi Gubbi country, Moreton Bay.

Janice was creative as a child. After completing high school she worked as a tracer in drafting and engineering firms and as an artist in advertising during the 1970s.

Her first art qualification in creative arts in the 1980s fostered her TSI heritage art interests to complete a Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art degree in 1999. Then a Fine Art with Honours degree in 2001. She also received a Griffith University scholarship award to complete a Doctor of Visual Arts in 2006.

Her work as a lifestyle, arts and network facilitator in the disability and aged care sectors led to an interest in the innate, intuitive and healing nature of art. It inspired her to complete an Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Art Therapy in 2014.

This focus continues within her arts practice and as an arts facilitator. She encourages the use of art as a means to express that which can’t be said by words alone.
