What if doctors could prescribe music for social connection and well-being? Visit North Lakes Library where Dr Melissa Forbes will teach you the benefits of group music-making.

This inspirational and interactive talk explores the connection between music and health. Through a blend of current research and real-world success stories, learn how group music-making can:

  • transform lives
  • build stronger communities
  • meet our social needs
  • help those experiencing health challenges or social isolation.

Musicians will benefit from understanding how they can expand their practice to include meaningful "good work". This work is excellent, ethical, and personally engaging while serving vital social needs.

Be prepared to join in, we'll put these ideas into practice with group singing activities! The ultimate icebreaker that brings people together.

Who should attend

You don't need a musical background to participate. Whether you're a musician, healthcare professional or passionate about building healthier, connected communities through music, this event is for you.

About the facilitator

Melissa is an Associate Professor in Contemporary Singing at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Using a positive psychology lens, Melissa's research uses qualitative methods to position music and singing as ideal practices to promote our social health. Melissa's work with Park n Songs, a health and well-being singing group for people with Parkinson's and their carers, showcases her dedication to making a positive impact through singing.

Currently, Melissa is working on a book manuscript for Routledge, The Positive Musician: Leading Self and Others to Flourish Through Music. The book positions musicians as positively energising leaders who promote the social health of their communities and features case studies of inspiring music leaders from across the globe.
