Mircobat walk and talk

16 Nov 2024 | 05:45 PM - 08:00 PM

Join Robin Rowland at dusk for a microbat workshop at Kumbartcho Sanctuary this November.

Robin will talk all about microbats, followed by a walk around the Kumbartcho grounds. We will try to locate some microbats on-site using special handheld echo-meter bat call detectors.

Robin is a PhD candidate and is very passionate about wildlife-human interactions. She focuses on wildlife physiological stress and behaviour. Her research focuses on understanding the impact of living near humans and urbanisation on insectivorous bats.

Microbats facts

Australia is lucky enough to be home to over 60 different microbat species. Southeast Queensland has around 30 species!

The Little Forest bat is the smallest, weighing 3 grams and the largest is the Yellow-bellied Sheathtail bat, weighing 60 grams.

Microbats play a crucial role in controlling insect numbers. They eat 40 per cent of their body weight each night.

Bring a small torch, wear comfortable closed-in shoes and learn all about microbats in this fun wildlife workshop.
