Develop your roving entertainment act workshop

Under the guidance of world-class professionals, Allie Wilde and Nick Cilento, you will develop a unique roving act by drawing on your existing performing art skills. This intensive development workshop consists of two 6-hour sessions. By the end, you’ll create your own roving act, ready to pitch to festivals and event organisers in Moreton Bay and beyond!

Through practical exercises, improvisation, and reflective dialogue, Allie and Nick will empower you to discover the depth and authenticity of your characters. This process transcends your performance skills, unearthing profound insights into the human experience.

Most importantly, this workshop will be informative and fun!

Who can apply?

Moreton Bay creatives over 18 years of age, who have existing skills in the performing arts, such as:

  • dancers
  • actors
  • gymnast/acrobats
  • comedians
  • singers
  • musicians
  • puppeteers
  • other performing arts skills adaptable to roving.

Solo, duos or trios are encouraged to apply.

What to expect

Learn about the fundamentals of roving entertainment, including:

  • interconnection, intuition, and interaction
  • challenges of live performance
  • movement and physical theatre
  • negative space
  • drawing and holding an audience.

You will try roving techniques, such as:

  • schooling
  • swarming
  • herding
  • dynamic stillness
  • kinesthetic response.

The workshop will also cover:

  • character and back story development - "Who am I and why am I here?"
  • understanding the use of space
  • how to think on the move
  • how to incorporate improvised performance
  • the importance of presentation and professionalism
  • selling your work and good marketing collateral.

This is a great opportunity to develop relationships with other members of the arts and culture sector.

About the facilitators

Allie Wilde and Nick Cilento bring a wealth of performance experience to their character development workshops, cultivated through years of collaboration as worldwide acrobatic and roving entertainers.

As seasoned facilitators, they seamlessly blend their expertise in various performance disciplines, including mask work, acting, and physical theatre, including both text and non-text-based performance. With a focus on character development, Allie and Nick guide participants through a transformative exploration of identity, empathy, and storytelling.

Their workshops cater to diverse groups, including emerging professionals, corporate teams, youth, and individuals with disabilities, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where participants can freely express themselves and delve into the intricacies of character creation.

Allie Wilde

Since 1998, Allie Wilde has worked as a performer, director, writer, creative consultant, producer, collaborator, performer manager, programmer and program coordinator, trainer and mentor. Today, Allie is one of Brisbane’s most respected circus performers and producers.

Allie is a recognised specialist in circus, physical theatre and interdisciplinary arts. She has trained in theatre and live performance and is a highly experienced acrobat and aerialist. Allie applies a theatrical focus to all her work and enjoys collaborating with innovative, bold and edgy artists and clients.

Allie has an extensive local and international performance and producing history. She has collaborated with clients including Brisbane City Council, Queensland Arts Council, Queensland Urban Utilities, Queensland Theatre Company, Woodford Folk Festival, Versace (Gold Coast), Warrawa Arts (Taiwan), Pen 2 Stage (Singapore and Brisbane) amongst countless others. Her experience brings a richness and depth of understanding to her work and to her relationship with artists and clients. Allie loves to collaborate and believes passionately in the value and necessity of the Arts.

Nick Cilento

A Brisbane-based professional circus and physical theatre performer and trainer, Nick is also a qualified animal behavioural ecologist (BA, BSch Hons). He is a highly skilled acrobat, counter-weighter and object manipulator, and has developed skills under the guidance of the world’s best master trainers.

Since 2001, Nick has worked alongside Allie Wilde as a performer and in facilitating a range of national workshop and emerging professional programs. Nick is trained in the disciplines of clowning, movement, Suzuki, mask and improvisation.

Nick also works frequently with Brisbane based companies Homunculus, Arts Health Institute, Premiers Department, Izit? Entertainment, Wilde Applause and More than Mime. He specialises in drama facilitation and has extensive experience in supporting young people on the spectrum.

Nick Cilento and Allie Wilde have worked together, as the Sault Poets, both performing, creating works and teaching, since 2001. Their relentless combined theatrical focus is to develop highly skilled, creative physical performance works, which are richly character and thematically driven. They focus much of their application of circus skills into an exploration of the potential ‘physical poetry of the body’.
