Art Social is a monthly program designed to create a warm and welcoming environment for creativity. Sit down with a cuppa, and enjoy the process of making with assistance from the gallery team to support your artistic experimentation.

Each month, these relaxed sessions will explore a different medium, process, or method of artmaking, with links to current exhibitions.

No prior experience is required. All materials are provided unless otherwise stated.

24 August: Still life sketching

Still life sketching, but not quite as you know it. Instead of fruit and skulls, explore artisan pieces by local makers, unique and quirky homewares, seasonal blooms and an eclectic mix of shapes, textures, colour, proportions and light. Over 90 minutes, you’ll experience light prompts and guidance, with plenty of time for free drawing or sketching. Bring a friend or make new ones in this social art session. While all materials are provided, attendees are welcome to bring their own.

14 September: Collagraph printmaking

Collagraph printmaking is a unique technique, combining collage and printmaking. In this relaxed and casual session, hear about different ways of kickstarting your collagraph journey, taking inspiration from current solo exhibition of Claire Ritchie’s work, Pick me. Designs can be constructed using anything from hot glue to cardboard and are brought to life with ink or paint. The result is a richly textured print with depth and detail that reflects the intricacies of the original collagraph plate. Experiment with a variety of mediums to prep your print plate to compose your own limited series of prints.

30 November: Punch needling

Can’t quite get the hang of crochet? Give punch needling a go! In this 90-minute session, be introduced to the basic elements of punch needle techniques and get started making your own mini hoop design. Punch needle is a style of hand embroidery, using a special hollow needle tool that creates fluffy loops of lush yarn. Take some time out for yourself and try out a new hobby in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Note: depending on the size and intricacy of your design, you may not complete your hoop during this session. We encourage you to consider picking up some second-hand yarn to continue your new skill at home.
