Deeply Unserious

Is art funny? Is art meant to be funny? Is art allowed to be funny? What even is funny? Deeply Unserious explores how artists use humour in their practice.

Objects become futile, sculptures are absurd, and there is a biting dark humour throughout. Building upon the history of humour in visual art, Deeply Unserious looks at the strategies and techniques contemporary artists employ to evoke a humorous response.

The proposed artworks will form an addition to the knowledge pool of artists who strategically use humour to subversively comment on social and political narratives and issues and who use humour as a tool for survival and resistance.

Artists include Alex Seton, Amelia McLeish, Daniel McKewen, Gordon Hookey, Maria Kozic, Matthew Griffin, Michael Lindeman, Sarah Byrne, Tony Albert, and Ursula Larin.
