Moreton Bay Region Outdoor Gallery - 2024 winners

As part of the Moreton Bay Region Art Prize for 2024, artists were invited to enter their works to be part of the Outdoor Gallery. The artworks of the six finalists will be displayed on banners at various locations across Moreton Bay from 3 June 2024 to 7 July 2024. Congratulations to the following artists for having their works selected:

Country Dancers

Julie Bruce, 2024

Artist statement: This collaged painting depicts dancing figures, who arm in arm remind us of the shindigs held in Moreton Bay country towns. The vibrant, swirling colours and repeated shapes express joy and movement. Mixed media materials such as paper, Gelli printing and ink pencils have been used to create this artwork.

Judge's note: There’s a great sense of movement in the image, the dancers feel alive and seem about to spring out of the painting. I feel like I can hear music when looking at the figures.

Borra ring with spirits (cropped)

Victor Robert Crouch, 2024

Artist statement: This painting is of a borra ring (meeting place). It depicts the spirits that are present and the well-trodden tracks of those who walk around it. The banner is a cropped part of a larger printing.

Judge's note: The sense of different journeys and relationship to place are strong in this image. The bold colours means it stands out for a viewer quickly passing, while the dot detailing will reward multiple views of the work.

Seasons

Lauren Rogers, 2024

Artist statement: My digital design, Seasons, pays homage to the ever-changing landscape of the Moreton Bay region, where nature unfolds its captivating beauty through each passing season. This artwork is a testament to the deep connection we share with the land, sea, and sky, as it pays tribute to the rich tapestry of Country that surrounds us. From the pops of blue hues, representing spring, to the warm hues of autumn, every season brings forth a unique transformation that reminds us of the cyclical nature of life. Through Seasons, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of our natural surroundings, to appreciate the profound connection we have with the land, and to honour the enduring spirit of our ever-changing Moreton Bay region.

Judge's note: Lovely use of tones in this image, the white, blue and pink really pop out from the image. Together the use of colour and different shapes does give a sense of nature being in flux. The imagery is appealing and speaks to the area.

Spin (dual)

Ella Evans, 2024

Artist statement: This piece is part of a series which explores floral species which may not traditionally be considered beautiful. The strong feminine aesthetic in the sweeping curves of the anthuriums draw clear references to the meaning of the flower itself, abundance, love and passion.

Judge's note: The luscious use of colour and strong rounded shapes make this a really attractive image that will pop against the external environment when used on a banner.

Fine Day

Lauren Edmonds, 2023

Artist statement: Fine Day is compiled from a combination of stills from a digitally hand drawn animation work of mine called Brain Damage. The images have drawn reference from photos taken at various climate protests I attended in 2019.

Judge's note: I like that this work clearly presents a protest, but that it’s not clear what for, leaving room for the viewer to fill in the details and think about what’s important to them and the community.

Colours of Moreton Bay

Michele Furlong-Olsen, 2024

Artist statement: This vibrant art piece was inspired by the amazing colours of the Moreton bay region. Locals and visitors love the sunrises and sunsets, the sandy beaches and waterways. Growing on the trunks of the coastal trees you may see the soft greens and blues of the lichen.

Judge's note: Fantastic use of colour and patterning to suggest the different qualities of the sand, trees, water and sky. I think this will be really striking on a banner and draw the eye immediately.
