School history excursion at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum

Our museums offer historical and educational experiences for primary school students. They’re delivered by qualified staff who can tailor an excursion to your students' needs.

Each museum program will delve into the history of their local area and explore topics like:

  • Australian life and World War 2 at Bribie Island
  • mid-century and colonial Australia at Pine Rivers
  • convict settlements at Redcliffe.

These programs will enrich your students' learning and align with the current Australian humanities and social sciences curriculum. Transport them back in time with an unforgettable experience.

Our museums offer a fun and educational experience for students, and our staff will help to make your visit as seamless as possible. Ensure you arrive at the museum on time. If you encounter any difficulties on your way, contact the museum.

Bribie Island Seaside Museum

Bribie Island Seaside Museum has a free and customisable tour for Prep through to Year 6 students to take a step back in time. These short tours take less than 2 hours.

Activities for Prep to Year 2 students

Prep to Year 2 students will experience what life was like for their parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents! They will also see the technological advancements in communication, as well as play some fun games of times past.

Activities for Year 3 to 6 students

Years 3 to 6 will see what it was like stationed on Bribie Island during World War 2. They will explore the reasons that people enlisted, discover what soldiers ate and learn the secrets of Morse code.

Pine Rivers Heritage Museum

Pine Rivers Heritage Museum has interactive tours exploring mid-century and colonial Australia for Year 1 and 2 students. These tours run from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Wednesday to Friday in terms 2 and 3. It costs $6.00 per student, and a maximum of 60 students can attend in one day.

Activities for Year 1 students

Year 1 students and supporting adults will discover the world of 1950s Australia.

  • Back to the Slate Board: students will go back in time for a 1950s school experience, they'll learn from a 1950s-styled teacher and will create their activity sheet using a hectograph.
  • A Suburban Dream: students will journey back in time to help prepare a 1950s family dinner. They will churn butter and see the technological revolutions of the decade. View the Suburban Dream resources.
  • Students will enjoy a facilitated tour of the museum's current exhibition. This will be an immersive experience where they will learn about the key items in the collection. Concluding the experience with a fun scavenger hunt!

Activities for Year 2 students

Year 2 students and supporting adults will explore colonial Australia.

  • Penmanship and wagons: using their copybooks and the museum's slate boards, this will be a fun exploration of 1890s penmanship and transport for students.
  • Through the wringer: students will learn how tough weekly laundry was in the 1890s. From mangles to pegs, washboards to coppers, they'll learn the ease of modern-day appliances in this suds-soaked tour.
  • Students will enjoy a facilitated tour of the museum's current exhibition. This will be an immersive experience where they will learn about the key items in the collection. Concluding the experience with a fun scavenger hunt!

Redcliffe Museum

At Redcliffe Museum, Year 3 and 4 students can experience life as one of Moreton Bay's first convicts during the 'A day in the life: the worst of the worst' tour, $6.00 per student. This tour is available from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday to Friday in terms 2 and 3, with a maximum of 60 students attending in one day.

Activities for students

  • Pugs and frogs - convict labour at Redcliffe: to create their settlement, students will problem-solve to create a brick kiln. They will get hands-on experience in brickmaking using replica 19th-century brick moulds and kinetic sand.
  • Bush'd lags - convict life and language: students will learn what life was like for real convicts. They will learn the strict rules that govern their daily lives and master convict slang.
  • Self-paced museum experience: there will be an opportunity to discover the museum's current exhibition. Watch films about the history of the Peninsula and learn about the Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi peoples and their legacy of custodianship.

Student supervision

Students must be supervised at all times. The suggested supervisor-to-student ratio is one supervisor per 15 students.
