Aussie Rules Upgrade Kicks Off At Pine Rivers

The Pine Rivers Swans AFL Club has scored brand-new facilities to come on line during the 2021 season, thanks to the State Government’s Works For Queensland program (W4Q) and Moreton Bay Regional Council.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the brand new $1.8 million changerooms and amenities at Rob Akers Reserve would be a major economic boost and replace the 50-year-old facilities.
“This investment literally allows for sports participation to grow tenfold at this facility,” Mayor Flannery said.
“And I think it’s the right investment at the right time, because after the COVID cancellations of club sport earlier this year we know families are just itching to get back on the field next year and get active.
“These upgrades will allow the Swans to not only attract new members but boost their income stream by hosting sports carnivals and events.”
Council received $500,000 from the State Government to fast-track this project as part of the ‘Unite and Recover’ COVID-19 response.
Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd said the W4Q program had already proven to be a major economic stimulator for the region, by putting cash in the hands of locals.
“The State Government knows the value of keeping work going, especially after Christmas to ensure we start 2021 on the right foot,” she said.
“The Pine Rivers Swans are a great sports club and now they’ll be able to share the game of Aussie rules football with even more aspiring young juniors, women and even senior players.”
Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8) said this upgrade just added to the ever-growing sports options in the local area.
“This is a project I’ve long been passionate about and I’m glad we are delivering upgrades to the mighty Pine Rivers Swans, with the help of Nikki and the State Government,” he said.
“I’ve been speaking with the club for two years now and they’re excited about the prospect of four new change rooms.
“The girls can now have access to change facilities at the same time as a men’s team so they can grow the women’s game.
“Council is also investing $5.7 million into the nearby Les Hughes Sports Complex baseball and rugby union precincts this financial year so that locals have more options for recreation in those sports.”
