Once a week, without fail, you’ll find two-year old Aiden Royce waiting in his driveway to greet the garbage truck drivers with a wave.

But last Tuesday the Cleanaway crew pulled into Aiden’s street with a special birthday surprise, parking the truck so he could see inside a life-size version of his favourite toy.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he expected it would become a cherished childhood memory.

“It’s definitely not an experience to be rubbished, I have fond memories of playing with my trucks and cars for hours each day as a young boy,” he said.

“When we heard from Aiden’s mother Kylie about his fascination with trucks, we knew straight away the best birthday surprise to give him.

Aiden’s mother Kylie said she was thrilled seeing her son’s excitement when the truck arrived.

“He is obsessed with garbage trucks, to the point where I have to sit there and watch trucks on YouTube with him all day,” she said.

“Aiden even knows the difference between the recycling bins and the waste bins, so he’s always making sure we’re disposing of our waste correctly.

“We usually stand outside the house watching the weekly garbage truck empty the bins, and when dad comes home, they bring in the bin together. If dad brings it in without him, he gets into trouble by Aiden!

“I reckon he’ll go to day care bragging about garbage trucks, it’s honestly all he ever talks about.”

Local Cleanaway Manager Brendan Borg said the crew loved driving down Aiden’s street and were happy to arrange the birthday surprise.

“No birthday is complete without presents; so we added to Aiden’s toy collection by gifting him a miniature garbage truck and truck colouring in activities,” he said.

“And we’re always on the lookout for reliable crew so, who knows, maybe one day Aiden will be behind the wheel and driving those trucks through the Moreton Bay Region himself.”

With over 1 million bin services every month, the waste and recycling collection drivers ask residents for their assistance to present their bins the night before service day, not to place bins on the kerbside behind parked cars or other restrictions, and to give them a friendly wave but don’t approach the truck for safety reasons.

Did you know that some household items are not accepted in bins because they are hazardous or could damage the trucks?
