Bridie Gillman, Some Sort of Growth - Moreton Bay Region Art Award

Rising southeast Queensland artist Bridie Gillman has continued her upward trajectory since winning the 2019 Moreton Bay Region Art Awards.

Last year’s overall winner hosted two solo exhibitions in the past 12 months – one in Brisbane and Christchurch – and is currently preparing for the opening of her first exhibition of 2020 at Edwina Corlette Gallery.

She encouraged aspiring artists who were considering entering this year’s Art Awards to take the plunge by applying on the Moreton Bay Regional Council website.

“It truly was incredibly encouraging to be recognised professionally,” Ms Gillman said.

“I was very humbled to be awarded the prize. The prize money was extremely helpful especially considering the precarious industry I find myself in.

“The one thing I'd say, and I'm saying this to myself too – just keep going and keep making.

“I get lots of rejections so sometimes it can be hard, but I think we just need to persevere and focus on progressing our work.”

The Moreton Bay Region Art Awards is an annual acquisitive art prize and exhibition proudly delivered by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The Art Awards offer an acquisitive prize of $8000 to an overall winner, four category prizes of $2000 each and two supplementary $1000 prizes for a Local Artist and People’s Choice Award.

Held annually, 2020 will mark the 27th year of the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards with the exhibition open from May 22-31 this year.

Acting Mayor councillor Mike Charlton said the council placed a high value on supporting the region’s creative talents.

“Last year’s awards were a great testament to the amazing local and broader talents that make the event so competitive each year,” Cr Charlton said.

“I personally love the work that Bridie Gillman is doing and encourage the next crop of emerging artists to have a go this year.”
