New CCTV Cameras Keeping Cyclists and Pedestrians Safe

Moreton Bay Regional Council has taken action to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists along 12km of pathway between Petrie and Kippa-Ring.
The $2.8 million security upgrade includes the installation of 45 new high performance, low light cameras on 22 CCTV poles to ramp up public safety along the Redcliffe Peninsula Rail Line.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the additional cameras increased Council’s CCTV network to over 1200 throughout the region.
“Council and QPS believe the presence of the cameras will deter crime and anti-social behaviour and support the detection and resolution of offences,” Cr Flannery said.
“We take a very strong stance on public safety and this is another tool in our region’s toolbox that will help to prevent and investigate crime.
“This project increases community safety and security for residents and visitors using the shared pathway both during the day and at night.
“It also provides coverage of key transit locations along the pathway, overlapping with CCTV coverage from the University Precinct as well as Queensland Rail cameras where appropriate.”
The project was delivered in partnership with the Federal Government’s Safer Communities program.
“The Federal Government was really happy to contribute the $1 million towards security on the Moreton Bay Rail Link,” Luke Howarth Federal Member for Petrie said.
“We have the upmost confidence the Moreton Bay Regional Council can deliver this properly, and maintain it for the benefit of all residents in the area.
“CCTV does provide an important deterrent and is a tool for QLD Police to use to provide safety for our community. I will continue to support the area with more funds for important infrastructure locally.
“Every person in our community whether you are elderly, a young adult, or a mum and child, you deserve to feel safe when going about our community and this $1m in Federal funding towards CCTV will help with that.”
