Tell us how tourism can turbocharge our economy
Published 11 December 2020
Booming drive tourism numbers have been the silver lining in the grey COVID cloud of 2020 here in Moreton Bay, and we want that momentum to continue well beyond 2021.
So who better to provide Council with suggestions for innovative new attractions and tourism opportunities than the people who know this place best - you!
Mayor Peter Flannery is urging industry, residents and anyone who loves Moreton Bay to have their say in the ‘Shaping Our Tourism Future’ survey that’s just opened.
“Build it and they will come,” Mayor Flannery said.
“But in order to know what to build, we first want to make sure that the thoughts and aspirations of people in our region are guiding this new wave of investment.
“So please tell us your thoughts on how we can make Moreton Bay the most exciting place to visit in South East Queensland!”
We’re looking for your ideas on tourism infrastructure opportunities to:
- Create new drive tourism destinations
- Unlock new recreation
- Enhance or improve existing attractions
- Fill any gaps on attractions/activities we might be missing
- Enhance our recreation trails and interaction with nature
- Support indigenous and cultural tourism
- Make Moreton Bay the most accessible tourism destination in southeast Queensland
The Moreton Bay Region is a diverse area, spanning more than 2,037 square kilometres and boasting everything from rural townships and urban centres to coastal villages.
Mayor Flannery said as one of Australia's fastest growing urban regions, it will be critical to drive new tourism investment to create the jobs and opportunities needed in the wake of coronavirus.
“Tourism will absolutely be key to our future success,” he said.
“Prior to the outbreak of coronavirus our industry was on a massive upward trajectory, in fact we’d just passed the $1 billion mark for the first time in terms of the amount of economic activity it brings to Moreton Bay.
“Tourism it supports local businesses, creates local jobs and enhances our region’s local economy and lifestyle.
“For too long the beauty of our region has been South East Queensland’s best kept secret, now it’s a secret I want to get out!
“Moreton Bay is home to some of Queensland's premier waterfront locations and pristine environmental areas, boasting everything from peaceful seaside towns to picturesque hinterland villages.
“Our hinterland region especially is an untapped resource, with sprawling natural beauty and unique vistas from the city, to the Glasshouse Mountains and across Moreton Bay - just a short drive from Brisbane.
“It’s truly remarkable, and with your advice we’ll be able to make this place something truly astounding.”
Consultation is now open and will close Sunday 17 January 2021.
