Fields of lights for Bribie's bright sports stars

Sandstone Point Sports Ground will be shining bright with $605,000 approved for new sports field lighting today.
Mayor Peter Flannery said he LED lighting would be a major boost for Bribie District Little Athletics and the Sandstone Point Cricket Club, by elevating the complex to the Australian Standard for both training and club level competition.
“Club membership numbers have surged for both organisations since COVID restrictions eased,” Mayor Flannery said.
“Enabling clubs to light-up and train at night makes participating in sport easier for families, because they can train and compete after school and work.
“This is a practical investment that will help our community clubs grow and encourage more people to take up sport.
“It’s also an investment in local jobs and infrastructure that’s been fast-tracked thanks to Federal Government support keeping more tradies on the tools during these uncertain economic times.”
The project is possible thanks to $242,000 support from the Federal Government’s Community Development Grants Program.
Member for Longman Terry Young said this project would provide a lasting benefit to the athletics club and others who use the Sandstone Point facility.
“I’m so glad to see this project get off the ground and I am very pleased to have secured a Federal Government contribution of $242,000 and again work with MBRC in co-funding and delivering a much-needed local project,” he said.
“Once installed, these new lights will allow access to the fields after dark for training and competition and ensure other Sandstone Point community and sporting groups can use the fields all year round.”
Councillor Brooke Savige (Div1) said these works were the culmination of two years’ worth of master planning and consultation with the local community.
“This project has been a high priority for both clubs and it’s exciting to see the project fast-tracked thanks to additional funds from the Federal Government,” she said.
“I want to thank the local sporting community for providing their feedback so we can deliver exactly what they need in the greater Sandstone Point area.
“This project will not only benefit the sporting clubs, but the wider community using this space for events or activities under the lights.
“I can’t wait to see the Little A’s and Cricket Club’s names up in lights once the works are complete.”
Construction will commence next month and is expected to be complete by the end of August.
