Brisbane Roar’s W-League are a step closer to calling the Moreton Bay Region home, with designs now underway for the new Queensland Centre of Excellence for Women’s Football at the South Pine Sports Complex in Brendale.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he wants works completed and ready for a 2023 kick-off, in time for the FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia.

“We already have the Brisbane Roar’s A-League and W-League sides committed to playing their home matches at Moreton Daily Stadium for the next two years,” Mayor Flannery said.

“So to have the women’s team and the junior program permanently move to Brendale is a fantastic boost for sport across Moreton Bay Region.

“Young boys and girls will be able to watch their heroes play right here in their own backyard and then have a direct pathway into the country’s top football league.

“The centre of excellence will include four new turf fields and two clubhouses – one for the Brisbane Roar and one for local clubs Albany Creek Excelsior Football Club and Moreton Bay United Football Club to share.”

Brisbane Roar CEO David Pourre said he couldn’t wait to see the detailed plans once they come to life.

“We’re thrilled to now have our Westfield W-League squad a step closer to entering their new home in the Moreton Bay region,” Mr Pourre said.

“Our Women’s program is passionately supported by many people throughout the region and has attracted thousands of visitors to the Moreton Bay Region for home games at Moreton Daily Stadium in recent seasons

“Our new home is beginning to take shape and we’re looking forward to following the progress and developments over the coming years.”

The South Pine Sports Complex will be one of biggest sports complexes in Queensland and will be home to more than 20 sports codes once it’s complete.

Adjacent to the Brisbane Roar facilities is the new $15.8 million Indoor Centre, which is now 90% through construction and is due for completion by late March.

“This is just another reason why Moreton Bay Region is quickly becoming the sporting capital of South East Queensland,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We have an upcoming NRL trial grudge match, Brisbane Broncos VS North Queensland Cowboys, scheduled at Moreton Daily Stadium on February 27.

“Council has invested $8.4 million to help upgrade Moreton Daily Stadium to 11,500 capacity so we can attract national competition and the economic benefits of having extra visitors in our region.

“I hope this shows the NRL that we’re fit and ready to have a Moreton Bay Region team running around in the national competition by 2023.

“We’ve also increased our investment into sports infrastructure across the region by 40 per cent in this year’s budget to support grassroots competition.”

Once the detailed design phase is finished Council will begin a tender process for construction.
