Bridging connections

Moreton Bay Regional Council has awarded a $521,000 tender for construction of the new Maba Court pedestrian bridge over Kedron Brook at Everton Hills.

The 30 metre elevated pedestrian bridge and 30 metre ramp will connect Olearia Street and Cribb Avenue, replacing the existing low level causeway crossing which was extensively damaged by the flooding of Kedron Brook last year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Division 10 Councillor, Brian Battersby, said the State and Federal governments had committed $199,000 in National Disaster Relief and Betterment funding to the new pedestrian bridge.

“The funding means Council can redesign and rebuild this important crossing to be more resilient to future flooding events without placing additional pressure on residents’ rates or council services,” Cr Battersby said.

“It is a good example of what can be achieved when all three levels of government work in partnership for the benefit of local communities.”

Member for Everton, Tim Mander MP said he is pleased to see that construction is on track to start soon.

“This project will improve the flood immunity of the crossing as the bridge structure will be higher than the existing footpath and culvert.

“The increased resilience of the new bridge across Kedron Book will minimise the risk of damage and repair costs from future flooding events, providing a safer, stronger and more usable asset for the community,” Mr Mander said.

Detailed design work on the new bridge is under way with construction expected to begin in April.
