Celebrating small businesses across Moreton Bay this May

Throughout May we are celebrating thousands of small businesses that have kept our economy moving across the region.

Moreton Bay Regional Council acknowledges the vital contribution small businesses make to creating local jobs and building strong communities this Queensland Small Business Month.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council was committed to supporting growth, resilience and innovation of our region’s businesses, reflected through the Small Business Friendly Council charter signed in May last year.

“Over the past 12 months, we have introduced a series of programs and business events to support our small business community, including an advanced manufacturing series and a business data club series,” he said.

“We have also collaborated with a range of organisations on networking events that assisted small businesses across the region to tackle cyber-security, promote circular economy and other initiatives which build on the Regional Economic Development Strategy’s blueprint for a bigger, bolder and brighter economy to create 100,000 new jobs in our region through to 2041.”

Other programs and activities include:

  • A Back a Local campaign encourages the community to actively make a choice to spend money with local businesses.
  • The Regional Economic Development Grants program provided $58,131 to eight business groups/recipients for activities such as membership drives, upskilling workshops, website rebuilds and strategy planning.
  • The Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards recognise, celebrate and support excellence across our business community.
  • Council sponsored the annual Moreton Bay Business and Jobs Expo to provide local businesses with an opportunity to showcase themselves to prospective clients, suppliers and employees.
  • Council signed a contract with Innovate Moreton Bay to deliver a series of capacity building, technical and talent workshops and profile-raising initiatives for the next three years.
  • A new Working with Council web page explains how local businesses can become a Council supplier.

Moreton Bay Region has more than 29,000 small businesses supporting 140,000 jobs, providing essential services and supporting sustainable communities.

Queensland Small Business Month offers a range of activities and events throughout May to provide advice and assistance to businesses. Moreton Bay Regional Council is committed to supporting small businesses across the region through the Regional Economic Development Strategy which lists 28 actions to spur the economy, generate investment and create jobs.
