Enhancing our amazing places and natural spaces

Moreton Bay Regional Council has launched its new suite of five long-term strategies and their supporting action plans to help deliver its vision to create a region of amazing places and natural spaces.

Together with Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy adopted in 2020, the new Community Wellbeing Strategy, Environment and Sustainability Strategy, Growth Management Strategy, Integrated Transport Strategy and Organisational Excellence Strategy provide an aspirational roadmap that will guide the decisions and actions of Council over the next 20 years.

Mayor Peter Flanner said, with our vibrant communities, healthy environments, well-planned places, progressive economy, and engaged council pillars at their heart, these strategies will play a central role in delivering long-term transformational change as our region grows and evolves.

“Together they will enable an integrated approach to planning, ensuring our natural environments are protected and our communities have the services and infrastructure they need.

“As part of our journey to develop these new strategies, we proactively engaged with our diverse communities and key stakeholders to ensure their input was considered.

“The Council has set a number of key targets across our strategies to help us focus on achieving our goals and outcomes.

“With Moreton Bay being one the most rapidly growing regions in Australia, ensuing this growth is managed in a coordinated and sustainable way will be one of the Council’s biggest challenges, but also one of our biggest opportunities.

“We’ve set an ambitious target to contain our urban footprint to 25% of the region, ensuring we retain important, productive rural areas, greenspace and habitat for wildlife.

“An overwhelming 73 percent of our communities told us that reducing Council’s own carbon footprint is a good use of public money, which is also why we’ve set a corporate, science-based, greenhouse gas reduction target of net zero emissions for Council operations by 2039.

“These strategies will help to ensure that our neighbourhoods and centres are well-planned, with a diversity of housing options and access to transport, services, education, jobs and green spaces. 

“They also recognise the significant role that Council can play in enhancing community wellbeing and inclusion, recognising that collaboration and partnerships with our communities and other stakeholders are critical to our success.

“Our focus on organisational excellence will ensure we embrace new technologies and innovation to continuously improve the way we work and deliver services to our communities.

“And we’ll use these strategies to build on the strong foundations established over the last decade here at Moreton Bay Regional Council, to shape a sustainable and prosperous future for the region.”
