Council wasting no time to accept disaster waste free of charge

Moreton Bay Regional Council has opened all its waste management facilities to accept disaster waste that has been caused by damaging flood waters this week free of charge and removed size load limits.
Mayor Peter Flannery praised the Queensland Government for approving a waste levy exemption, which will allow Council to process these bulky items without it costing millions of dollars to ratepayers.
“While flood waters are still a concern across parts of Moreton Bay, we’re getting on with the recovery effort to ensure residents can get back to normality as soon as possible,” he said.
“Council has expedited the decision to open all of our waste management facilities so residents can dump their damaged bulky items that won’t fit into a wheelie bin.
“If you have beds, couches or other large furniture items, we’ll take them off your hands and process them absolutely free of charge.
“Please note delays can be expected during peak hours so please check CCTV cameras at our major waste facilities by visiting Council’s website.
“We understand that some areas have been ravaged more than others and some roads still remain closed, so we are also deploying skip bins to areas that are most in need right now.
“Council’s waste management contractor Cleanaway also wasted no time and begun working on regular kerbside wheelie bin collection on Monday, which will continue subject to road closures and remaining flood waters.
“Where safe, please leave your bin out for collection and it will be serviced as soon as practical. We will be prioritising collections on general waste services (red or green lidded bins).
“We are working with urgency to resume full-service capacity and will undertake catch up services as soon as practical.
“Unfortunately many bins weren’t able to be collected due to flood waters and road closures. Please leave them out and we will get to them as soon as possible.
“I can assure you we are putting on as many staff as possible to make sure this recovery effort is a swift one and you can all get back to some normality as soon as possible.
“Please be kind to our workers, who have been working right around the clock since the beginning of this wet weather system to help residents in need.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has been doing the right thing during this natural disaster by staying home and staying off the roads.”
