Rugby League & history collide at new Dolphins exhibition in Redcliffe

It’s ‘Phins Up!’ at Redcliffe Museum with a new exhibition dedicated to the Dolphins, and their incredible journey to the NRL, opening this month.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the new 'From Shellgrit to Dolphins' exhibition is a one-of-a-kind look into the history of the club that rugby league lovers and history buffs alike will enjoy.
“Council has teamed up with the Dolphins in their inaugural NRL year to bring the club’s rich history and legacy to life,” he said.
“The Dolphins might be the youngest team in the NRL but the club itself has one of the most storied histories of any in Australia after being founded in 1947.
“Home to iconic players like Arthur Beetson, Dick Turner and Peter Leis, the club has played an integral role in the fabric and the history of the Moreton Bay region over many decades.
“Running from now until October 8, the exhibition is a fascinating look at the team, the big ideas that got them to the national stage, and their ongoing community spirit.”
Dolphins Chairman Bob Jones said the club was honoured the Redcliffe Museum chose its history as the focus of this exhibition.
“It has been an exciting time watching the club’s first steps into the National Rugby League this year, but we must never forget where we came from,” he said.
“This exhibition is a fitting reminder of all the work that has been done by so many volunteers and good people over the more than 75-year history of the Dolphins, and that it is these efforts that have got us to where we are today.”
Councillor Sandra Ruck (Division 5) said Council’s investment in the club was an investment in the region.
“Council has contributed $400,000 in sponsorship to the club over the next two years and we invested $8.4 million towards Kayo Stadium construction costs, helping the Dolphins to establish themselves and showcase Moreton Bay to the rest of the nation,” she said.
“Now we’re bringing their incredible story, from humble beginnings to national superstars, to sports fans from far and wide.
This special exhibition features memorabilia from past and current players; including Petero Civoniceva’s juniors’ jersey, medals and awards from as far back as the 1950s and the six Queensland Cup trophies the Redcliffe Dolphins have won.
Councillor Karl Winchester (Division 6) said, to celebrate, Council is hosting a range of free events for fans of all ages.
“The Phins Up Family Fun Day will take over the Redcliffe Museum on Saturday 26 August from 11am-2pm,” Mayor Flannery said.
“Sports and history enthusiasts are invited to join in the Dolphins-themed fun with free dolphinthemed face-painting, fan crafts, a range of football challenges and a BBQ provided by Redcliffe Central Lions Club.
“Or join us for a rare and memorable evening with Dolphins Chairman Bob Jones, and renowned author and sports journalist Steve Haddan.
“Immerse yourself in footy fever, while enjoying tasty finger food and hearing all about the evolution of rugby league over the years.
“Delve into the triumphs, challenges, and defining moments that have shaped the Dolphins into the success story they are today at this special event on Saturday 22 July.”
