Early learning waste warriors taking on landfill

Early learning centres across Moreton Bay Region have reduced their landfill contributions by up to 50% in some cases, thanks to Council’s free Waste Minimisation Program.

Mayor Peter Flannery and local councillors congratulated the five early learning centres that won this year’s annual Waste Minimisation Program Awards.

“I’m always astounded by the ability of local young people to not only grasp a concept like sustainable waste management, but to actively implement it,” he said.

“Council does a fantastic job at educating them early on about the benefits of reducing landfill, recycling and disposing waste correctly, so that they carry it on into their adult lives.

“On average the early learning centres who participated in the waste minimisation program reduced their general waste to landfill by 33% and increased their recycling by 32%.

“They did this through a range of initiatives such as reusing items like cable wheels as tables and chairs, using old milk cartons for worm juice sales and composting food scraps for worm farms and chickens instead of throwing them out.

“Containers for change has been a big hit in early learning centres, as well as initiatives to recycle printer cartridges with Planet Ark and recycling soft plastics.

“They’re just some of the amazing things our early learning centres are doing to help make Moreton Bay Region a better, more beautiful place to live.

“If these children can help be a part of the solution then I’m sure us adults can take their lead and change our daily waste habits for the better too.”
