Entire council coming to Deception Bay for $3.7m celebration

You’re invited to the official opening of Deception Bay’s brand new $3.7 million community hall on February 16 - so mark your calendar!

The whole elected Council will be turning out for the event at Raymond Terrace, Deception Bay as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s ‘Community Council Meetings’ series, which takes Council proceedings out of the chambers to a venue near you.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the $3.7 million project involved demolishing the old building to deliver a brand-new events and meeting space for the community as well as a new home for the local Meals on Wheels.

“After COVID distancing we want to start 2022 by bringing our communities back together - which is why we’ve spent the lockdown periods building better facilities like this new hall, and it’s also why we’re taking our Council meetings on the road to ensure we’re more available than ever,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We hosted our first Community Council Meeting in Samford earlier this year, and I’m looking forward to hearing firsthand about the topics that the community here in Deception Bay is passionate about.

“The reconstruction is really amazing and would not have been possible without the Federal Government’s $2.5 million contribution from its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, I encourage everyone to come down and check it out.”

Division 5 Councillor Sandra Ruck said there would be a flurry of activity ahead of the hall’s opening, bringing with it not just better facilities but also an injection for the local economy as its bounces back from COVID-19.

“The summer months often mark a bit of a downtime for the construction industry, but we’re keen to keep projects going so that they’re ready for the community to use as soon as possible,” Cr Ruck said.

“The next few weeks will mark a key turning point for the new community hall as it heads towards the finish line, prepares to re-open and becomes the new home of our local Meals on Wheels.

“Similarly, we’ll also see plenty of progress on the old fisheries site upgrade with tradies to begin the finishing touches on the new facility out there, giving the gift of a new place to gather come the first quarter of next year.

“As local Councillor, I look forward to welcoming everyone to Deception Bay in the new year and celebrating our major investments.”

The Community Council meeting in Deception Bay replaces the event originally scheduled at the Woodford Memorial Hall, where air conditioning works are currently underway. The Woodford event will be rescheduled to 20 April 2022.

Community members are invited if they have a topic they would like to discuss with the Mayor and Councillors on the day, to make a request through the Council website for a Deputation Meeting.
