Funding welcomed for enhanced CCTV camera network

City of Moreton Bay’s call for extra CCTV cameras has been heard, with a $1million election commitment announced yesterday by Mark Ryan MP and Ali King MP if Labor is re-elected in October.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery welcomed the significant boost to enhance safety and deter vandalism across the City.
“City of Moreton Bay has already implemented one of the largest local government CCTV networks in Queensland, and this very welcome announcement will expand our safety network so residents can continue to feel secure in their own home and public spaces.
“We’ve heard the community calls to crackdown on vandalism and crime.
“Our innovative CCTV network of more than 1800 cameras already helps police and Council’s local laws officers respond faster to criminal and antisocial behaviour.
“I am proud that we were the first council to provide Vehicle of Interest alerts to the Queensland Police Service through our Licence Plate Recognition units.
“With more than 9,400 automated real-time alerts sent to police in 2023, Council’s initiative has played a pivotal role in managing unlawful activities.
“In fact, Unlawful Use of Motor Vehicle offences across City of Moreton Bay reduced by 4% between 2022 and 2023 while to the north and south they experienced increases in vehicle theft.
“The expansive network also supports disaster operations and flood monitoring, protects Council assets, deters vandalism and illegal dumping, and assists in the management of localised crime issues.
“Council takes a very strong stance on public safety, with CCTV infrastructure providing an important deterrent and a valuable tool to help police reduce incidents of local crime.
“Every person in our community deserves to feel safe and this funding commitment for extra CCTV is welcome.
“We look forward to discussion with all political parties to ensure City of Moreton Bay matters and the voices of our community are heard.”
As one of Australia's fastest growing local government areas, City of Moreton Bay matters. We need our fair share of funding so we can future-proof our city and ensure it's a place where our community, economy, lifestyles and environment prosper together.
