Funding for critical road link in Narangba supports future housing

City of Moreton Bay has obtained a $10.1 million grant from the Federal Government’s Housing Support Program to fund a critical road link to support new housing.
The upgraded Young Road / Oakey Flat Road / Sovereign Drive intersection in Narangba will ease congestion and feature a multi-lane, four-leg signalised intersection with separated left and right lanes on each approach, along with dedicated pedestrian crossings and on-road bicycle lanes.
Mayor Peter Flannery thanked the Federal Government for their contribution to the project which is already at the detailed design phase thanks to Council funding of almost $2 million.
“This Federal Government funding is an acknowledgement of the very real future traffic demands on City of Moreton Bay, as a key population growth front of South East Queensland.
“Significant housing developments at Narangba Heights and Kinma Valley, means that this area will experience an increase in traffic.
“The Narangba Heights and Kinma Valley development sites will deliver over 3,200 future housing lots that will address much needed housing supply in our City.
“This will support us in meeting the Shaping SEQ 2032 housing targets that have been set by the State.
“However, without robust planning and a strategic approach to infrastructure, you’re going to get really bad community outcomes.
“So, it’s pleasing to finally see the penny drop that Councils cannot develop land for housing without proper infrastructure.
“We’re future proofing the City, by ensuring critical infrastructure is not an afterthought and instead is used to facilitate new housing.
“Importantly it will ensure the liveability that City of Moreton Bay is renowned for remains a top priority.
Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11) said the project would future proof this area of City of Moreton Bay.
“It will not only improve vehicle access via Oakey Flat Road, which is a key north-south route in the City but also ensure better and safer access to Narangba train station.
“With some of our local schools including Carmichael College, Narangba Valley State School and Narangba Valley State High School located within 2km radius of this project, the upgraded road will also reduce congestion and improve safety for active travel.”
“This part of City of Moreton Bay is growing rapidly, and we are working hard to ensure infrastructure can meet demand now and into the future.”
Council will provide more information on the design of the Young Road / Oakey Flat Road / Sovereign Drive intersection to nearby residents and road users in the coming months.
Construction of the Young Road / Oakey Flat Road / Sovereign Drive intersection will begin in late 2025, with the project to be completed in 2026. It will be delivered by City of Moreton Bay.
