City of Moreton Bay has taken one of the final steps in greenlighting construction of the much-anticipated upgrade of Youngs Crossing Road across the North Pine River.

Today Councillors unanimously resolved to enter into a contract with the recommended tenderer, for construction of the new four-lane bridge and road at Joyner.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was an historic day for the City marking the culmination of years of planning and advocacy to the state and federal governments for funding support.

“This decision will be welcomed by many thousands of residents and businesses who rely on this section of the City’s road network every week,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This upgrade to Youngs Crossing will provide flood immunity during heavy rain events and subsequent water releases from North Pine Dam and Sideling Creek, preventing the closure of Youngs Crossing Road and reducing impacts on the wider transport network.

“It’s an important milestone signalling the City will a soon have a permanent, reliable solution in place for one of our most vulnerable and frustrating choke points."

The Youngs Crossing upgrade is one of the biggest road infrastructure projects to be delivered by Council and crucial to transport services within our city. The project spans more than one kilometre from Protheroe Road to Dayboro Road, including construction of a bridge approximately 200 metres long.

Mayor Flannery said following today’s decision the Council’s CEO would finalise contract negotiations in accordance with legislative requirements.

"Once the contract has been signed, I look forward to being able to officially introduce the construction contractor to our Moreton Bay community in the coming weeks," Mayor Flannery said.

"Council appreciates the community's patience, understanding and cooperation while the project team has progressed planning, design and early preparatory works ahead of the bridge and road construction phase."

Mayor Flannery thanked the Federal and State Governments for recognising the overwhelming benefits of the project.

“This is what can be achieved when all levels of Government work together.  This project has been debated for decades, we are now ensuring that the project gets delivered, the time for talk is over.

“Considering the rapid growth of our population, the upgrade to Youngs Crossing is essential infrastructure that will ensure connectivity across our City.

“As a Council, we will continue to advocate for funding for growth, in particular critical infrastructure to tackle congestion and unlock housing.”

The upgrade has a funding commitment of $51.6 million from the Australian Government as well as a further $15 million from the State Government.

Cr. Jim Moloney (Div 8) encouraged locals and road users to stay informed, emphasising the importance of registering for project updates to stay ahead of construction developments and potential impacts on their commute.

"With work ramping up in the coming months, our project team and contractor will be keeping the community updated on construction activities ahead of the anticipated mid-2025 start," Cr. Moloney said.
