Major intersection upgrades given the green light

Council’s transformation Old Gympie Road has the green light to go after a $6.5 million tender was awarded to start works February 2022 on upgrades to the intersection with Boundary Road, Dakabin.

Mayor Peter Flannery said this was just one of many projects being rolled out this financial year totalling $21 million to upgrade Old Gympie Road over the coming years.

“Geographically this is one of the most central intersections in Moreton Bay Region and it will play a huge role in our traffic network as we continue to rapidly grow,” he said.

“That’s why Council is getting on the front foot now to upgrade it to a signalised intersection, as well as many safety upgrades like pedestrian crossings, connecting pathways and bicycle lanes.

“We expect works to be finished by October 2022 so motorists can start spending less time in traffic and more time doing the things they love with their families and friends.

“Thousands of vehicles from our region’s north, south, east and west all pass through this intersection on their way to work, on the school drop off and other purposes, so it will be a welcome upgrade for many.

Councillor (Div 7) Denise Sims said this was just the beginning of a series of congestion-busting works to improve the liveability of locals in her region.

“Old Gympie Road is becoming more and more popular as the region grows and the Bruce Highway becomes flooded with cars, which is why we’re also rolling out multiple projects to improve its capacity,” she said.

“In this 2021-22 Budget we dedicated more than $21 million to start works between Boundary Road and Whitehorse Road and there will be further investment as work rolls out over the coming years.”

Old Gympie Road and Boundary Road intersection upgrades are expected to start in February 2022 and finish October 2022, weather permitting.
