Moreton Bay Council reviewing flood damage

Published 26 January 2012

Moreton Bay Regional Council crews are out and about across the region today reviewing road conditions and assessing damaged caused by this week’s flood event.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said although gauges indicated river levels were now steady or receding, council would continue to closely monitor weather conditions with rainfall of 15mm to 50mm predicted today.

“With rain predicted for some days to come, the Local Disaster Management Group remains on alert.  As the flood waters recede, council has begun cleaning debris from roads, parks and beaches and assessing the condition of public facilities,” the Mayor said.

“Council's road crews have been out and about early reviewing road conditions and getting on with the job of repairing potholes.”

Around 60 roads are closed while 59 roads are passable with care. Details are available at: www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/roadconditions

“With water still on some roads after so much rain, I urge motorists take care and not put themselves or others at risk.  If it is flooded, forget it,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“Streams, creeks and drains also pose a danger so please keep children away from such locations.”

Seqwater has advised that water releases from the North Pine Dam will continue throughout the day and are now expected to finish early Friday, if there is no further significant rainfall. Youngs Crossing will continue to be impacted while releases continue.

Mayor Sutherland said 341 requests for assistance had been received by the SES.

“SES crews are doing a fantastic job and have already attended to 90 percent of these requests,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“A number of roof tarping and sandbagging requests were received from residents in the Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Bribie Island, Petrie and Caboolture area following last night’s thunderstorms.”

Beaches at Scarborough Beach Park, and at the corner of Little Street and Maine Terrace, Deception Bay remain closed due to sewage pump station overflows.  "Beach Closed" signs are in place.

Mayor Sutherland said council's evacuation centres at Narangba, Deception Bay, Morayfield, Woodford and Caboolture closed at 8am this morning.  Evacuation centre staff will remain on alert.

Due to the heavy wet weather, council's three outdoor Australia Day events planned for Bribie Island, Strathpine and Redcliffe (Suttons Beach) have been cancelled.
