The finish line for Brisbane to become the 2032 Olympic City is in sight with just one hurdle left to jump - the International Olympic Committee today announcing a formal vote on Brisbane’s proposal will be held Wednesday 21 July 2021.

Mayor Peter Flannery said securing the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games would help market Moreton Bay Region to the world, with our region planned to host the Olympic boxing event.

“I’m pumped to announce that if the Brisbane 2032 proposal is successful ours will be one of the regions getting major infrastructure investment, with an Olympic quality venue to be built here at The Mill site in Petrie,” he said.

“This would have huge legacy benefits for our region by activating The Mill Priority Development Area during the Games and providing a brand new community facility that could be used to host a multitude of indoor sports, exhibitions, trade shows, festivals, community groups and much more.

“The Mill is a perfect location for an Olympic venue being a short drive from the Brisbane International Airport and CBD, and it has its own train station.

“So my promise to visitors is that this is the best place to see your sport and also enjoy some legendary Queensland beach time, sunshine or even wine time up in the Hinterland.

“We’d be pulling no punches in ensuring that visitors leave Moreton Bay Region raving about what a great time they had here.

“Moreton Bay Region is one of the fastest growing Council areas in Australia – with our population set to surpass the state of Tasmania by 2031.

"A successful 2032 Olympics proposal will not only put us on the map, but it’ll fast-track the delivery of vital infrastructure to help our region become a powerhouse of South East Queensland.

“We want to see more infrastructure investment on this scale to provide recreation infrastructure that keeps pace with our growth, provides new jobs, and helps to attract events, tourism and investment in our region.

“We will continue to work closely with the SEQ Council of Mayors, the State and Federal Government and the Australian Olympic Committee on maximising the legacy benefits of the indoor sports centre for our region.”
