Moreton Bay counting down to historic NRLW Grand Final on home soil

Footy fever is sweeping Moreton Bay with less than 48 hours to go until the Dragons and the Roosters do battle for the 2022 NRL Telstra Women’s Premiership crown.
Acting Mayor Jodie Shipway said council was proud to be joining with the Queensland Government and the NRL to be hosting the inaugural standalone NRLW final at Moreton Daily Stadium.
“As a rugby league fan and passionate advocate for women’s sport, I can’t wait to welcome the crowds to Redcliffe on Sunday,” Cr Shipway said.
“It’s a proud moment for sport in Moreton Bay, and the whole country.
“The competition deserves a standalone event like this, and we are honoured that we could make this possible.
“From our $8.5 million investment into Moreton Daily Stadium, to throwing our support behind the Dolphins’ successful bid to join the NRL in 2023, and hosting the Vodafone Warriors this season, Moreton Bay has cemented its reputation when it comes to delivering elite sporting events.
“This event will pump $1 million into the local economy and bring 11,500 rugby league supporters to our region.
“From the iconic Redcliffe coastline just down the road from the stadium, to the stunning green hinterland, there’s no better place to explore and stay than the Moreton Bay, so we look forward to welcoming everyone this weekend.
“These elite female athletes are inspiring the next generation of stars.
“You’ll be able to see the newly crowned Dally M Medal award winner Emma Tonegato in action when she lines up at fullback for the Dragons.
“Emma was also crowned for Tackle of the Year on Roosters centre Jessica Sergis, so that’s sure to add some extra spice when they face off on Sunday.
“I wish both teams all the best!”
Dragons forward Kody House said she couldn’t wait to run out onto Moreton Daily Stadium.
“Being in Redcliffe too, this is my hometown in Queensland, so I’m really excited,” Kody said.
“I played in the 2018 season down in Sydney, so it’s really good to have the support up here, especially with Redcliffe having the new NRL team next year.”
Roosters centre Leianne Tufuga said the match was sure to bring a lot more recognition to the women’s league.
“I’m so happy to be in Moreton Bay - we left the rain behind us in Sydney and as soon as we landed and saw the sun, we were so grateful. It’s brought a lot of positive energy,” Leianne said.
“I can’t wait to see the beaches and natural attractions and hopefully do a few more fun things. This is my first time here, so I want to experience a lot more.
“A lot of young players have been shining this year, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the connections, growth and passion when we run onto that field.”
The NRLW grand final is on this Sunday, April 10 at 1.30pm at Moreton Daily Stadium.
Gates will open at 10.45am with a QRL under 19s curtain raiser between Wynnum and the Gold Coast to kick off from 11.15am.
