Moreton Bay: the welcoming city

City of Moreton Bay has reaffirmed its commitment to cultural diversity and inclusivity by officially joining the Welcoming Cities network.
Welcoming Cities, an initiative of Welcoming Australia, stands as a beacon for local governments across the nation, dedicated to nurturing communities where every individual feels a sense of belonging and can actively engage in all aspects of community life.
Mayor Peter Flannery said multiculturism and diversity was at the heart of the Moreton Bay community.
“Moreton Bay is a culturally and linguistically diverse city, with one in five residents born overseas and more than a third of residents having at least one parent born overseas,” he said.
“Council aims to be as inclusive as possible for all its residents regardless of background, age, gender, or ability.
“Everyone deserves the right to feel welcomed in their community and joining the Welcoming Cities initiative is another step in that direction.
“Council is already working hard in this space, partnering with community organisations, supporting multicultural events, and implementing our long-term Community wellbeing strategy which prioritises inclusion.
“This announcement coincides perfectly with Harmony Week, when Council will be putting on a host of events through our galleries, libraries and museums.
Welcoming Cities Manager, Sebastian Geers said the initiative sets a national standard for cultural diversity, inclusion policy and practice in local government, helping to create communities where everyone can belong.
“We are excited to work alongside City of Moreton Bay, known for its rich cultural diversity, to advance communities where people of all backgrounds can belong, contribute and thrive,” he said.
“City of Moreton Bay becomes the 84th member of Welcoming Cities, the network now represents over 50% of the Australian population.”
Welcoming Cities membership is an outcome of City of Moreton Bay’s Community Wellbeing Strategy - Connected Communities Action Plan.
