NOW OPEN: Expressions of interest to activate Council land for housing
Published 15 December 2023
Expressions of interest are now open for community housing and specialist homelessness providers to activate and develop City of Moreton Bay-owned land through new 50-year, peppercorn leasing arrangements.
Parcels of Council land at 33 Oakey Flat Road, Morayfield and two parcels at 72 and 74 Cox Street, Caboolture will be activated for new social and affordable housing to address housing shortages.
Mayor Peter Flannery said this initial land offering is open to registered not-for-profit community housing providers or specialist homelessness services.
“The situation is dire, and the stark reality of homelessness these days is that it could happen to anybody from working parents with young children to grandmothers,” he said.
“That’s why in July, we announced that we would audit our current land holdings to determine if there were any locations that could work for the purpose of community housing.
“We identified these two parcels of vacant land at Morayfield and Caboolture as ideal locations to help address the housing shortage.
“We’ve also amended our Community Leasing Policy to allow us to lease Council-owned land for community housing that can put a roof over people’s heads.
“I’m proud of our Council, who have taken a daring step and are thinking outside the box to make a tangible difference to residents.
“Now we’re looking for forward-thinking organisations that would be interested in being part of this initiative to develop, maintain and manage these sites for crisis, social or affordable housing.
“Our commitment to lease unused Council land is part of our newly adopted Housing and Homelessness Action Plan.
“It sits alongside other landmark initiatives including our announcement in August 2022 to waive development fees and infrastructure charges in fifteen suburbs for affordable and social housing.”
EOI open Friday 15 December, 2023.
