New flood monitoring stations for Region

Published 26 September 2012

Nine additional flood monitoring stations will be installed by Moreton Bay Regional Council over the coming months in Ocean View, Strathpine, Pumicestone, Caboolture and Upper Caboolture.

A council investment of almost $300,000 will add river height and rainfall gauges to the following locations:

  • Bribie Island Road - Caboolture
  • Creek Road - Burpengary East
  • Gympie Road - Strathpine
  • King John Creek at the Bruce Highway - Caboolture
  • Mathew Crescent - Burpengary
  • Mount Mee Road - Ocean View
  • McClure Road - Upper Caboolture
  • Milwood Road - Stanmore
  • Pumicestone Road - Toorbul

Mayor Allan Sutherland said the Bureau of Meteorology will be provided with direct access to the new gauges as part of council's coordinated approach to disaster management at the local, district and state level.

"Members of the public can access the 47 river and rainfall gauges currently operated by council on the Bureau of Meteorology website," the Mayor said.

"The nine new gauges will be added to the Bureau's website, increasing the information available to residents and businesses particularly in and around Caboolture and Strathpine."

To view the latest rainfall and river heights in the region visit www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood/seast.shtml.

  • River conditions can be viewed by selecting the Caboolture/Pine or Upper Brisbane/Stanley basin areas.
  • Rainfall totals can be observed on the South East Queensland map.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Brian Battersby said flood monitoring station devices provided council with a 24-hour continuous weather watch over the region.

"These gauges are used by council and the Bureau to monitor rainfall and river rises to provide early flood warnings to the community," Cr Battersby said.

"This information can also accessed by members of the public just like the weather radar to help make their own assessment about the impact of a wet weather event."
