Preparation now is key to ensure safety

Tropical Cyclone Alfred predictions this morning highlight significant concerns for City of Moreton Bay with predictions of landfall most likely between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
TC Alfred will bring heavy rains, damaging and destructive winds and flooding. Residents are being urged to take the warnings seriously and prepare for a cyclone or flood event.

Mayor Peter Flannery said: “City of Moreton Bay continues to monitor the evolving situation and is prepared.
“Please be assured our first priority is the safety of our community and staff.
“Cyclones and the associated destructive winds are different to what many people may have experienced. If winds get above 80kmh, it will become unsafe to move, and we will not be able to assist residents. So, I encourage people to make an emergency plan now.
“I am aware that many in the community are anxious and my advice to our residents is to use this time to prepare their homes.
“We encourage people to consider staying with family and friends if living in low lying or exposed areas, prone to flooding.
“I have no doubt, as a community, we will get through whatever Tropical Cyclone Alfred brings.
"We will continue to keep people informed and share information as soon as it comes to hand.”
Sandbag stations across City of Moreton Bay are active.
The 13 stations cover all of City of Moreton Bay. We urge residents to think of others and only take what they need. Replenishment occurs from approximately 7am to 8pm and does take time. Thank you for your patience.
Have a plan to move to shelter.
Residents should consider strategies to shelter in place, where safe to do so, or evacuate early to family and friends. If winds get above 80kmh, it will become unsafe to move, and we will not be able to assist residents. If life is in danger, call 000.
Flooding is a significant concern.
All low-lying coastal communities are vulnerable to an increased risk of high tides. Residents need to consider their situation and make decisions to leave early to family or friends in less vulnerable locations if they are at risk from tidal flooding or isolation.

When guidance on storm tide forecasts is released by BOM we will message vulnerable areas directly through MoretonAlert or if required Emergency Alert.
We are door knocking low lying areas that will be flood impacted by high tides and severe weather.
QPS and SES are door knocking areas this morning including parts of Toorbul, Beachmere, Donnybrook, Meldale, Bribie Island, Clontarf, Griffin and Scarborough.
Resource Recovery centres.
Council’s waste facilities are open. Green waste stations are free and open for people to prepare their property ahead of severe weather. Extended services include Ningi Transfer Station open this Wednesday and Toorbul Transfer Station open this Tuesday and Wednesday.
Preparation works are active.
Drainage is being checked, beaches are being monitored, and shade sails and other structures are being assessed and removed where required.
Places of refuge.
Places of refuge will open for all people including people experiencing homelessness. These are places of emergency refuge. We encourage people to plan and leave early to stay with family or friends in less vulnerable locations if they are at risk. Council will inform residents of locations and when they open.
Event cancellations.
Moreton Bay Kids Festival to be held this Sunday is cancelled.
