Prepare yourself now for intense storms

Now is the time to prepare your home and family for dangerous storms and possible localised flooding, especially if you live in a rural area that might get cut off.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a possible 300mm deluge, life-threatening flash flooding and gale-force winds from tonight and into the weekend.

Mayor Peter Flannery said while the weather might look like it’s improved, this is not the time to be complacent.

“We’re not trying to alarm anyone, but now is the time to prepare your home and family in case the situation escalates, particularly if you live in a rural or western community where you could find yourself suddenly isolated” he said.

“For example the Stanley River is at 4.5 metres and rising, meaning the D’Aguilar Highway could be cut off at Woodford.

“Stock up on essentials like food, water and medicines, and keep a battery-operated torch handy. Charge your mobile phone in case of an emergency, and make sure your important and valuable documents like passports or insurance papers are accessible, safe and waterproof.

“It’s these simple measures which could prove a lifesaver if something goes wrong.

“We’ve opened our sandbagging stations to the public, closed all our public jetties, and have our evacuation centres on standby to open if the situation escalates.

“Even if this storm doesn’t eventuate, it’s always better to be prepared than caught off-guard by a disaster. If conditions worsen, it is forecast to happen quickly.”

Council’s evacuation centres at Woodford Memorial Hall, Caboolture Memorial Hall, Watson Park and Bribie Recreational Hall are ready for activation, with Council staff and Australian Red Cross, Salvation Army and SES also ready to respond.
