Rainfall Prediction a Sign to Prepare This Get Ready Week

Get Ready Week

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the risk of locally heavy rainfall across western and southern Queensland over the next two weeks to kick off a third straight year of La Nina weather, which means it’s time to Get Ready Moreton Bay.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council was offering free Get Ready Week workshops across most Moreton Bay Region Libraries from Monday to Friday (Oct 10-14) to help residents prepare their properties and their emergency plans.

“The Bureau of Meteorology has announced a third straight year of La Nina weather and we all know how devastating the February and March floods were,” he said.

“Many homes were completely inundated and destroyed by flood waters, so it’s important we all get on the front foot to prepare before the next weather event.

“This Get Ready Week we’re urging residents to prepare their properties by putting together an emergency and evacuation plan, tidy up your properties and create an emergency kit.

“This goes for businesses too, who should all create business continuity plans or update their existing plans, so they don’t get caught out in the event of a disaster.

“To help you develop your plans, Council is putting on 10 free workshops across Moreton Bay Region Libraries where we’ll help you with this task.

“You’ll be able to pick up practical tips, tricks and ideas to help easily put together your emergency plans and a shopping checklist of items to include in your emergency kits before it’s too late.

“Council also offers a range of free resources to help keep you safe in the event of an emergency like our free SMS service, MoretonAlert, which you can sign up for now to receive emergency warnings prior to an event.

“And our Disaster Portal is a one-stop shop to get real time information that you need to know, like road closures, evacuation centres and weather-related announcements.

“So, please don’t get caught out this storm season and make sure you’re prepared by using one of the many Council resources available - it’s much easier than you think.”
