Splash Into Australia Day at Lawnton

The show will go on at Lawnton Aquatic Centre this Australia Day after Council contributed $22,500 to the Lawnton Swim Club to throw their annual Aussie Arvo celebrations for the community to enjoy.
Mayor Peter Flannery said he was thrilled to see the Aussie Arvo celebrations continue once again in 2023 thanks to Council’s support through the Division 7, 8 and 9 Local Community Support Grant.
“These celebrations get bigger and better every year since the first event in 2018 with nearly 3,000 people attending last year’s Australia Day celebrations at the Lawnton Aquatic Centre,” he said.
“We’ve been supporting this event since for years now and the Lawnton Swim Club do a fantastic job every year, which is why we’re so proud to help them host a great party for the community.
“We know locals want more events closer to home, and we’re proud to be delivering that this year with the events calendar boasting over 40 free community events delivered in partnership with Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism to every corner of Moreton Bay.”
Each councillor from Div 7, 8, and 9 will contribute $7,500 toward the total pool from their annual Local Community Support Grant budget.
Councillor Mick Gillam (Div 8) said this is a cheap event for local families to enjoy with free entry, $1 sausages, $1 popcorn and $1 fairy floss.
Councillor Yvonne Barlow (Div 7) said the Aussie Arvo was the best way to beat the heat this Australia Day.
“There’s no better way to cool off and have a great time full of fun activities like the thong throwing competition and fireworks to end the night.
“Lawnton Aquatic Centre is a fantastic facility with plenty of space for everyone - all you need to do is bring your swimmers, a towel and sunscreen.
Councillor Cath Tonks (Div 9) said it was a great day out for the whole family.
“I am sure all the children will enjoy the free rides and slide and who doesn’t love a swim on a hot sunny day,” she said.
“We encourage everyone to come along on Australia Day and join in the fun, a great way to beat the Aussie heat.
“So bring your togs, towel, hat and sunscreen for a fun-filled day of music and entertainment.”
