A $1.35 million sporting partnership between the Queensland Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council has delivered new playing field infrastructure for the Narangba United Football Club.
Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, Steve Dickson and Mayor Allan Sutherland officially opened the new fields at the Narangba Sports Reserve on October 12, 2013, as part of community fun day celebration.
“This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when state and local governments work together to deliver a result for the community,” Minister Dickson said.
It’s an investment in physical activity and the health of one of Australia’s fastest growing urban regions.”
Mayor Allan Sutherland said the new infrastructure included a lit field for seniors and a junior practice area with Moreton Bay Regional Council contributing $630,000 to the $1.35 million cost of the project.
“On behalf of the club, players and the community who will benefit from this important infrastructure, I want to thank the Minister and the Queensland Government for their commitment to the delivery of new fields at the Narangba Sports Reserve,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“Soccer has the highest participation rate of any competitive sport in the Moreton Bay Region with more than 7,500 men, women and juniors strapping on the boots for a kick with one of the 17 locally based football clubs.
“This is sporting infrastructure that is needed for a growing club, a growing football code and a growing region.”
The new fields at the Narangba Sporting fields include extensive drainage to get teams back on the field sooner after heavy rain with approximately 12,500 m2 of new turf laid over 10,300 m3 of cut and fill earthworks, and illuminated by 4 towers delivering over 100 lux of lighting for night games and training.
“Construction of the new fields was a major undertaking and I thank Narangba United Football Club members for their patience while council got on with the job,” Division 11 councillor Bob Millar said.
“It’s a project we’ve all worked hard to achieve, but more importantly the new fields have enabled the club to consolidate its operations at the Narangba Sports Reserve with juniors previously playing the bulk of their games at the Williamina Court grounds.
“It builds in additional capacity here and at Williamina Court; it’s a good result all round and that was the ultimate goal.”
Moreton Bay Regional Council will invest $54 million in local sport, recreation and parks in 2013/14.
