Art At Large: Murals expression of interest

Stairs painted

As part of the Art At Large program, we commission mural spaces and invites expressions of interest from experienced professional artists. These opportunities are open to all Australian artists. You do not need to live in City of Moreton Bay to apply.

Assessment criteria

Expressions of interest will be considered against the following criteria:

  • Strength and merit of artistic practice.
  • Connection and relevance to the context of the mural site.
  • Shows an understanding of making art for the public realm.

Expressions of interest have now closed.

Bribie Island Library − one commission

Situated on the foreshore parade of Bongaree, the mural site is the exterior façade of the Bribie Island Library. The façade is on the left side of the building facing the car park on Second Ave.

The library hosts regular events for all ages and abilities and sees over 70,000 visitors a year. Bribie Island is a highly visited location and sees over 800,000 visitors every year. The mural will be a contemporary design that appeals to the local community and day-trippers. It should reflect a growing and evolving coastal environment.

Experience in designing and facilitating workshops with a diverse range of people is essential. The wall has a lower and upper façade. The total mural size is 90 square metres.

The successful artist will receive a concept design fee of $2,000. They will also get $840 for planning and running the workshop. This amount includes the workshop materials fee.  The budget to paint the mural will be $10,800.

Gayundah Coastal Arboretum − three commissions

The arboretum looks out over Moreton Bay towards Mulgumpin (Moreton Island). At the southern end of the path is the Gayundah wreck. In 2024, a new sandstone retaining wall was built, with a set of flagpoles and a stone with a plaque dedicated to the HMQS Gayundah.

The pathway lighting was recently upgraded with a new solar solution at the Gayundah Coastal Arboretum in Woody Point.

23 concrete plinths have lighting poles mounted on them, spread along the 600 metre-long-path at the arboretum park.

The surface areas of these concrete plinths will create the 3 mural sites. Each plinth is 1.5 metres x 1.5 metres x 1 metre. They provide approximately 5 square metres of surface for mural artwork design.

Three commissions are available with the 23 concrete plinths split into 3 groups. These murals will be contemporary designs. Experience in designing and facilitating workshops with a diverse group of people is essential. The 3 mural sizes range from 30 square metres to 45 square metres in total.

Successful artists will receive a concept design fee of $2,000. They will also get $840 for planning and running the workshop. This amount includes the workshop materials fee. The budget range to paint each mural will range from $4200 to $6300.
