Reconciliation Action Plan

Moreton Bay’s land, sky, seas, and waterways have always been a place of cultural, spiritual, social, and economic significance to its Traditional Custodians, the Jinibara, Kabi Kabi, and Turrbal peoples. We pay respects to Elders, past, present, and emerging.

Council has recently adopted its inaugural Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan(PDF, 5MB) (RAP) which marks an important step in Council’s long-term reconciliation journey. The adoption of the RAP is a symbol of our commitment to reconciliation.

Our vision is a city in which the histories and cultures of Traditional Custodians are recognised and celebrated as an irreplaceable foundation of our collective identity. Where Council decisions and services are culturally informed through understanding history and a prioritisation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices.

We aim for a city in which:

  • Traditional Custodians and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities view Council as an advocate and partner.
  • Our staff have the knowledge they need to support reconciliation in practical ways and do so from the heart.
  • Our resources and influence are effectively leveraged to combat racism and support equality, equity and opportunities for all people.
  • Our focus for the next two years is on building our internal cultural capability and processes; and better supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, residents and businesses.

Council thanks the Traditional Custodian representatives of the Jinibara, Kabi Kabi, and Turrbal peoples, and community Elders who gave their time to share their insights and often difficult stories which were invaluable to the shaping our thinking and understanding, both in the development of this RAP, and on our longer-term journey of growth and reconciliation.

Council has also been lucky to work with Jenny Kent, from Manamana Dreaming, whose artwork for the document has so beautifully captured the diversity and vibrancy of our city.
