Fireworks at events

Fireworks are a regulated activity in City of Moreton Bay. This is to protect public health and safety, and to minimise impacts on wildlife, the environment and local communities.

Fireworks regulations

Fireworks can only be bought, stored, transported and used by professionals licensed by the Queensland Government.

If you plan to have fireworks at your event, you will need to engage a licensed fireworks operator. They will need to submit a ‘Fireworks Notification Form’ to the Queensland Government at least 7 days before your event.

For more information, visit the Queensland Government’s Fireworks licensing and handling information.

Council restrictions for fireworks at events

Approval to use fireworks will depend on the location of the event, time of year and environmental factors like high tides.

You cannot use fireworks for a 6 hour period, 3 hours before and 3 hours after a high tide at a location that is within 2 kilometres of a known shorebird roost or 3 kilometres from the Toorbul or Kakadu Beach shorebird roosts.

Wildlife considerations

Fireworks are known to significantly affect migratory shorebirds, flying foxes and colonial breeding waterfowl.

We recommend conducting a night assessment of your proposed location before submitting your event application. This helps you to identify any wildlife present. We also recommend that you review Council data and maps to make an informed decision about using fireworks at your event.

Use the following resources to check wildlife locations.
