Fauna movement infrastructure

Fauna bridges and underpasses provide native wildlife with safer access between the region’s parks, reserves and corridors.

They also help to improve safety for motorists by reducing the likelihood of collisions with wild animals.

Wildlife movement infrastructures re-establishes important ecological linkages previously severed by roads.

Council’s Green Infrastructure Network Delivery Program has installed:

  • 36 canopy bridges
  • 18 dedicated fauna underpasses
  • 121 LED vehicle activated signs
  • 158 road pavement stencils (Wildlife, Koala Zone, and more)
  • 288 fauna escape poles
  • 31 fauna refuge poles
  • More than 21 kilometres of fauna exclusion fencing
  • 16 Fauna Escape Hatches

Fauna Escape Hatch Trial

City of Moreton Bay is testing a new Fauna Escape Hatch to improve wildlife safety. It provides a one-way exit for wildlife, steering them away from our roads. This is an Australian first-in-network trial of the device. We have purchased and installed 16 units across seven Council-managed roads.

This hatch design complements koala escape poles to help them find safe bushland habitats.

The trial is based on recent studies that show that ground-level infrastructure can help keep wildlife safer.
