Bulky household and vegetation collection service

Council used to offer an on-demand kerbside collection service for bulky and large household items that did not fit into a standard wheelie bin. The service was on offer for 3 years. It had a very low take-up by residents and Council decided to stop the service in October 2022.

The service stopped because on average only 8 households per month used it. This compares to over 92,000 self-haul domestic trips to waste facilities per month in 2021. The cost to have and maintain a rear lift truck, a flatbed truck and workers was too much for the low uptake. It was not commercially viable for ratepayers to continue to finance this service used by less than 0.06% of households in our city.

Alternatives and options available to residents include:

  • self-hauling to a local Waste Management Facility which accepts those waste types
  • using commercial green waste bag services
  • hiring skip bins and bulk waste pick-ups
  • utilising handyman and gardening services
  • hiring a ute or trailer.
