The story of Walter Henry Scott (1882 - 1948)
Published 18 April 2023
Meet Walter Henry Scott - a man of courage, resilience, and determination. Walter was born in 1882 and enlisted in October 1915 at Brisbane. He was a horses breaker, and he was allocated to the 15/2 Light Horse Brigade initially. However, due to the losses incurred in World War 1, more men were needed in the infantry, and Walter was transferred to the 2/4 Pioneers in April 1916.
On 12 April 1916, he embarked on a journey with other New South Wales troops on board R.M.S. ‘Mooltan’ from Sydney, hoping to make a difference in the war. His dedication and commitment were tested when the Battalion participated in the advance that followed the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line in early 1917. Later in the year, the Australian 4th Division moved to Belgium in the Ypres sector, and it was there that the 52nd Battalion was involved in the Battle of Messines between 7 and 12 June.
It was during this battle that Walter's life took a drastic turn. He was badly wounded in the arm and leg, and his life hung by a thread. He was taken to the 53rd C.C.S. (Casualty Clearing Station) and then to the 4th General Hospital at Dannes Camieri, France. His next of kin was advised of his critical condition, and he was repatriated from France to England on board the ship ‘Newhaven’ by the end of June. Walter's leg had to be amputated, and he spent a long time recovering.
After Walter's preparations were complete, he embarked on a journey back home to Australia on board the H.M.A.T. ‘Ulysees’ on 10 September 1917. His return was a moment of great joy for his loved ones and friends, but life was not the same for Walter.
He became known as Peg Leg Scotty in the Strathpine area, where he drove a team of six bullocks hauling molasses tankers and railway wagons between the Normanby rum distillery and the Strathpine Railway. Despite his physical limitations, Walter never gave up, and his spirit of resilience continues to inspire us to this day.
Walter Henry Scott - a true hero who sacrificed his body and soul for the love of his country. Let us remember him and pay tribute to all the brave men and women who fought and continue to fight for our freedom.
