Meet our new library card
Published 14 September 2023
In 2023, City of Moreton Bay Libraries opened an expression of interest to local artists to design a new limited edition library membership card. After a number of excellent submissions, Emily Howard was selected by the judging panel and commissioned to create this exciting new work.
The card is the result of a Regional Arts Development Fund grant, which enabled us to commission artwork from Moreton Bay resident and artist, Emily Howard. Emily is an interdisciplinary artist using mediums as diverse as collage, photography, screen printing and textiles.
We caught up with Emily Howard to find out more about the process she used to create the new card design.
What was your inspiration behind the design?
As part of my inspiration and research, I visited several Moreton Bay Libraries, including North Lakes, Redcliffe, Strathpine and Albany Creek. I observed library programs and learners of all ages enjoying the library resources. I found it very impactful to see educational opportunities for children, students, adults and seniors that promote life-long learning in our community.
What design elements did you use for the artwork?
My design focuses on establishing a vibrant and inviting colour palette of warm and cool tones to represent the welcoming and safe atmosphere of Moreton Bay Libraries. The artwork originates from using shapes and motifs from our library environment and abstracting them using paper collages. In my library card design, I used numerous motifs from our library environments to represent the resources provided at our local libraries, such as books, technology, and educational programs
An artist can put their art on almost anything, why a library card?
Libraries are continually evolving to meet the needs of their community members. In my artwork, I aim to share how libraries evoke a sense of connection within community hubs and develop individuals' inspiration, knowledge and wisdom. Libraries create a safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages to connect and interact as a community. Libraries allow individuals to form connections with people, technology and literature.
