Beachmere footbridges removal

We have closed two footbridges at T.E. Bonney Reserve, Beachmere for safety reasons. The footbridges are located within the mangroves and dunes. They will remain closed until removal, which should be before Christmas 2024. The footbridges will not be replaced.

We understand the foreshore is a popular area for local dog owners. Access will still be available via the stairs near the car park.

Reason for removal

We sought independent specialist advice before deciding to remove the footbridges. The movement of the nearby sand dune has impacted them. High tides and storms have eroded the foundations, exposing and damaging the rock and concrete supports of the bridges.

About the footbridges

In 2018, we built two tidal channels to improve tidal flows to the mangrove wetlands. These channels have been very successful with substantial mangrove growth since their establishment. These footbridges enabled pedestrian access across the channels during higher tides.
