Flooding is a natural process, and many people in the region will likely experience flooding of some kind in their lifetime. This is due to our network of rivers and creeks, subtropical climate, mountainous areas in the west, and low-lying coastal areas in the east.
It is important to understand our flood risk so that we can plan, adapt, and learn to live with flooding.
Learn about flood hazards and flood risks and how they relate to the nature or behaviour of flood waters, the chance of a flood occurring and the consequence for people, property, infrastructure, and the environment.
Despite the term a one in a hundred-year flood, there is no such thing as a flood that only occurs once every hundred years. These terms have caused confusion, are misleading and impact the understanding of the likelihood of a flood occurring.
The region is no stranger to floods. Council has continually improved the flood information available to our community, as well as improved how we plan, manage, and respond to flood risks.
